Scuba diving on the Gilis: Discover Scuba or Open Water?
Updated October 24, 2026 · 5 min read
Book Discover Scuba if you want to try one supervised ocean dive; choose Open Water if you want a qualification you can use again. They are not shorter and longer versions of the same booking. Discover Scuba is an introduction, not a diving certification.
| Option | What it is | Listed duration | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover Scuba (Manta Dive) | Pool practice, then a guided ocean dive, up to 4 divers per instructor | 5 hours | €90 per person |
| Discover Scuba (second listing) | Introduction for novices, basic swimming ability needed | 5 hours | €89 per person |
| Open Water course | Theory, confined water, four open-water reef dives, digital certification | 3 days | €308 per person |
| Open Water course (Manta Dive) | Open Water Diver course | 3 days | €449 per person |
What a first dive includes
The beginner Discover Scuba experience on Gili Trawangan starts with pool practice and then a guided sea dive. Its listing states no previous experience or certification is required and a maximum of four divers per instructor. A second Discover Scuba option on Gili Trawangan likewise asks only for basic swimming ability.
That format is sensible when you are curious, short on time or unsure how you will react to breathing underwater. It does not make you an independent diver. Confirm whether the ocean dive, equipment, photos and any conservation fee are included in the exact option.
When Open Water makes more sense
Open Water combines theory, confined-water skills and several open-water dives over multiple days. The Open Water course on Gili Trawangan is listed at three days with four open-water reef dives and a digital certification (€308 per person, three reviews so far); Manta Dive’s Open Water course is also listed at three days (€449, no reviews yet). It is the better use of holiday time only if certification is the goal. Do not squeeze it between boat transfers or a flight: the dive centre must advise you about its schedule and the required interval before flying.
Before enrolling, ask which training organisation issues the certification, how missed sessions are handled, what languages the instructor teaches in, and whether all course materials and equipment are included. Medical screening is part of responsible diving; answer the centre’s questionnaire honestly and follow its referral process rather than relying on a travel article.
Our recommendation
For a one-off experience, choose the pool-and-sea Discover Scuba programme and keep the rest of the day free. If you already know you want to continue diving, book Open Water with enough consecutive days and compare the complete course, not only its headline price.
