Mount Rinjani: 2 or 3 days, summit or crater rim?

Updated October 24, 2026 · 6 min read

Two days suit fit hikers focused on one objective; three days make sense when the lake and hot springs matter as much as the summit. The crater rim is not a lesser choice: it avoids the summit push while retaining the caldera view. None is an easy walk.

What two days mean

The two-day Rinjani summit trek concentrates the climb, an overnight camp and the summit attempt into a short itinerary. That means long days, loose volcanic ground and very little recovery time. A separate two-day Senaru crater-rim trek targets the rim rather than the main summit. Read the route name carefully; “two days” does not describe one standard experience.

What the third day buys

The three-day summit, lake and hot-spring trek spreads the itinerary and adds terrain inside the caldera. The extra day brings more scenery, but also another night camping and more cumulative ascent and descent. Choose it for the route, not because you assume it is automatically comfortable.

Closures can rewrite the itinerary

Gunung Rinjani National Park can close routes for the wet season, ecosystem recovery, fire or other hazards. Its published guidance describes a routine closure from 1 January to 31 March, plus incidental closures. In 2026 the park reopened after the wet-season closure and later limited access again to reduce fire risk, which is why an old blog post is not enough. Before paying, ask the operator which gate is planned, where you exit, and what happens if the park changes access.

Questions worth asking

Confirm the group size, guide and porter arrangement, sleeping equipment, water, meals, toilet setup, waste policy, insurance expectations and cancellation terms. Ask what fitness the operator assumes and what happens if you turn around. Do not treat a high rating as a medical or safety guarantee.

Our recommendation

For most strong hikers who primarily want the summit, the two-day summit trek is the direct choice. Select three days only if the lake and hot springs are essential. If steep loose ground or a pre-dawn summit push sounds wrong, choose a crater-rim itinerary and confirm its current route before booking.
