Kuta Lombok: beaches, surfing and Selong Belanak

Kuta is a practical base for Lombok’s south coast, but the best beach depends on what you want to do. Selong Belanak is the obvious starting point for a beginner lesson; Tanjung Aan and Bukit Merese suit a beach-and-viewpoint day. Do not assume that staying in Kuta means every beach is walkable.

Learning at Selong Belanak

The beginner surf lesson at Selong Belanak includes a board and safety equipment according to its listing. The listing promises gentle waves and a local instructor for 2.5 hours, but conditions change; ask whether the lesson will be moved or cancelled if they are unsuitable.

Beginners should book instruction rather than simply rent a board. Confirm lesson length, transport, the instructor-to-student ratio and whether the operator provides clothing or only the board. No surf spot is safe in every tide and swell.

A south-coast day without rushing

Tanjung Aan and the nearby Bukit Merese viewpoint combine well because they are in the same part of the coast. A private beginner lesson with beach stops and sunset at Bukit Merese includes hotel transfers in its listing and makes sense for travellers who prefer one arranged day.

The weakness of an all-in-one day is time: changing beaches, showering after a lesson and waiting for sunset can leave little space to relax. If surfing is the priority, devote the morning to it and keep the afternoon flexible. If scenery matters more, skip the lesson rather than turn it into a rushed photo stop.

Transport and planning

Ask your accommodation about current travel times and return transport; road conditions and pickup zones vary. If using a scooter, only do so with the correct licence, insurance and experience. A driver is the calmer choice for a multi-beach day.

For most first-time surfers, choose the dedicated Selong Belanak lesson and plan only one later stop. Choose the combined private outing when transfers and a sunset viewpoint matter more than maximum time in the water.
