Bali to Lombok and the Gilis: fast boat, ferry or flight?
Updated October 24, 2026 · 5 min read
Take a fast boat for the Gilis, consider a flight for southern or central Lombok, and use the vehicle ferry when carrying a vehicle or when flexibility matters more than speed. The best route depends on your first bed, not on the word “Lombok” on the ticket.
Fast boat: direct to the Gilis
Fast boats leave Bali ports including Padangbai and serve Gili Trawangan and, depending on the sailing, other islands and Bangsal. A one-way fast boat to Gili Trawangan avoids an airport transfer and a second boat. The trade-off is sensitivity to sea conditions. Confirm the Bali departure port, baggage rules, check-in time and the operator’s policy if a sailing is delayed or cancelled.
Ferry: for vehicles and patient travellers
The public ferry connects Padangbai with Lembar. It is the logical sea route for a vehicle, but Lembar is not the gateway to the northern Gilis. You still need an overland journey after docking. Schedules and fares can change, so check ASDP, the Indonesian ferry operator, rather than relying on an old timetable.
Flight: useful for Kuta and the south
A flight from Bali lands at Lombok International Airport, well south of Mataram and the Gili harbours. It can work well if your first stay is around Kuta Lombok. For the Gilis, it adds an airport transfer and a boat, so the short flight is not the whole journey.
Plan the last leg before booking
Fast boats may use Bangsal or another Lombok harbour; flights finish at the airport; the ferry finishes at Lembar. Put the final hotel on a map and price the complete route. If you will explore Lombok by road, compare rental cars for Lombok, then check the provider’s deposit, excess, CDW and fuel policy before booking.
Our recommendation
For the Gilis, start with the direct fast boat. For Kuta Lombok, compare a flight plus transfer with the full boat-and-road journey. Choose the ferry deliberately for a vehicle or a slower, flexible crossing – not because it appears cheapest before the onward transport is added.
